Project Overview

This project focused on developing the complete packaging system for the UTAB Sorena swing gate opener. The scope covered packaging graphics, box structure, and the design of the internal protective foam.

The gate opener itself was also designed during this project, though the product design files are not included in this portfolio. The packaging system was produced as a prototype for pilot production — to evaluate packaging performance and transportation safety before full-scale manufacturing.

"The product was large and heavy. Securing it through transport wasn't an afterthought — it was a core design requirement."

Design Challenge

Three constraints shaped every decision on this project:

03

Design Exploration

The initial concept followed UTAB's original brand colors — black and yellow — emphasizing a strong industrial and technical look. Multiple iterations were developed across this direction before a strategic shift changed the brief.

Direction 01
Black & Yellow — Industrial
UTAB's house colors: dark background, bold yellow logotype, red accent panel for specification copy. High-contrast industrial aesthetic, strong shelf presence.
Direction 02
Kraft / Natural Texture
A second exploration using natural kraft-textured stock with warm gold and dark navy — more premium, less industrial. Tested the limits of the brand before the strategy pivot.

04

Brand Strategy Pivot

After discussions with the marketing team, the packaging direction shifted to highlight UTAB's connection to Electropeyk. The design was updated to combine Electropeyk's blue with UTAB's yellow identity color.

Before pivot
UTAB-led identity
Black base, UTAB yellow dominant. Electropeyk presence minimal — a sub-brand footnote rather than a co-identity.
After pivot — final
Dual-brand synthesis
Electropeyk blue as main color field, UTAB yellow as accent and logotype. Both brands visible, neither subordinate. Clean and easy to recognize across both markets.
05

Final Packaging

The final packaging uses Electropeyk blue as the main color while retaining UTAB's yellow accents. This approach highlights the connection between the two brands while keeping the design clean and easy to recognize at point of sale.

Protective Structure Design

In addition to the packaging graphics, the internal protective foam was designed to secure the gate opener components during transportation. The foam layout organizes the main arms and accessory parts while preventing movement and possible damage inside the box.

Internal Structure
Custom-profiled styrofoam system
Two-piece foam assembly — a contoured bottom bed that cradles the main arms, and a top lid that locks down against them. Separate compartments for the control box, bracket, infrared break beam sensor, and flashing light.
