StepSense

A smart running shoe paired with a mobile app that gives runners real time feedback on gait, foot pressure, and injury risk. This project covers the full design process, from user research to interaction design and UI.

Problem

Injuries build up before they're seen

Most runners don't notice gait issues until they're already injured, because there's no simple way to see what's happening beneath their feet.

User Research

Questionnaires, then interviews

Questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with young urban runners to understand their habits, expectations, and attitudes toward wearable sports technology.

Questionnaire Study

Understanding lifestyle and footwear behaviour
Target groupYoung women aged 20 to 25 living in Tehran
Research Topics
  • Footwear usage and care habits
  • Walking and daily movement patterns
  • Lifestyle and clothing preferences
  • Cultural interests and hobbies
  • Brand awareness and product perception
Example Questions
  • How much do you walk during a typical day?
  • How do you usually travel to work or university?
  • What do you do in your free time?
  • How do you take care of your shoes?
  • Which sports brands do you recognize?

Interview Study

Understanding lifestyle and footwear behaviour
Participants20 participants from the questionnaire group, selected based on similar responses
Discussion Topics
  • Awareness of international sports brands
  • Attitudes toward Iranian sports brands
  • Expectations from running shoes
  • Durability and long term use
  • Interest in innovative sports technology
Example Questions
  • Which sports brands do you recognize?
  • Do you prefer domestic or international brands?
  • What features are most important in running shoes?
  • Would you buy an innovative product from a local brand?

Goals
  • Improve running performance
  • Stay healthy and avoid injury
  • Feel confident while exercising
Needs
  • Clear feedback on foot pressure
  • Lightweight, comfortable shoe
  • Performance and aesthetic appeal

Motivations
  • Confidence and achievement
  • Energy and social recognition
User Scenario

From ignored pain to corrected form

To better understand how gait issues develop during everyday running and how StepSense supports behavior change, the following scenario illustrates a typical user journey.

User scenario storyboard, a runner ignores mild knee pain, StepSense insoles detect uneven pressure distribution, the app gives a direct insight, and within two weeks form improves and the pain disappears

Inspirational Concept

Raksh, the legendary horse

The form language of StepSense draws from Raksh, the legendary horse of Persian mythology, translating its muscular structure and dynamic movement into the shoe's silhouette.

Design Research

From muscle to silhouette

The curved lines of the horse's muscular structure were translated into the shoe's silhouette and structural lines.

Design research sketches translating the horse's muscular curves into pen line studies and coloured shoe renders

Final Product Experience

Preventing running injuries through real time movement insight

StepSense integrates pressure sensing smart insoles with an intuitive mobile interface to detect gait imbalance early and guide users toward safer movement patterns.

Form Development & Sensor Integration

A platform built around the sole

The footwear design translates biomechanical requirements into a lightweight running shoe platform, embedding distributed pressure sensors within the sole structure.

Mobile Interaction & Feedback Loop

Six screens, one feedback loop

The StepSense app visualizes pressure distribution, gait risk indicators, and shoe health metrics, enabling users to monitor performance, adjust posture, and share reports with healthcare professionals.

Role & Authorship

Research, form, and interface, end to end

StepSense was designed as a UX Designer working across the full process, from questionnaire and interview based user research, through the symbolic form concept and sketch development, to the final mobile interface and feedback loop, using Figma, Illustrator, and InDesign.

Design Outcome

Data, and meaningful interaction

The project shows how wearable technology can combine functional feedback with emotional product design.

By bringing together biomechanical analysis and symbolic inspiration, the concept connects performance, health awareness, and identity within a single product system.

The design explores how technology can support runners not only through data, but also through meaningful interaction and motivation.
